What's the Kp index?
The planetary Kp index gauges geomagnetic activity (0–9). Higher values mean auroras visible farther south:
- Kp 6 – Minor storm: aurora in Canada, Scandinavia
- Kp 7 – Moderate: possible in northern US, Germany, UK
- Kp 8 – Strong: aurora may reach central US & Europe
- Kp 9 – Extreme: rare, aurora at very low latitudes
